Scholar from Guatemala will attend college in honor of Rebecca Townsend

Rebecca Townsend started "She's the First" at Immaculate High School - the charity will send a scholar to school in Rebecca's name

Education was of utmost importance to 2015 Immaculate High School graduate and Brookfield resident, Rebecca Townsend. So much so that she started a chapter of the charity “She’s the First” (STF) at Immaculate.  She’s the First sponsors girls’ education, with the goal of creating more first-generation graduates and our next generation of global leaders.

The Immaculate chapter of STF chapter helped a number of girls receive an education. "One that stands out to us is Joy, a third-grader in Uganda, whose very name reminds us of Rebecca's impact on the lives of everyone around her, near or far," says STF.

Rebecca was killed tragically on July 2 following the Danbury Fireworks. She was planning on attending University of Notre Dame in the fall.

In honor of the education that has been taken away from her, She's the First will be sending one of their scholars from Guatemala to school in Rebecca's name.

She's the First Facebook page reads:  Rebecca should have begun attending the University of Notre Dame this fall. In honor of the education that has been taken away from her, we'll be sending an STF Scholar from Guatemala to university in Rebecca's name.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 11AM at St. Joseph Church, Brookfield, CT with the Rev. George F. O’Neill, Pastor, and the Rev. Jeff W. Couture, Immaculate High School Spiritual Director, as leading celebrants. Burial will follow in Newtown Village Cemetery, Newtown.

Friends will be received on Monday, July 6, 2015 from 3PM – 7PM at St. Joseph Church, 163 Whisconier Rd., Brookfield, CT. A prayer service will be conducted in the church at 7PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions to the Rebecca Draper Townsend Memorial Fund, made to Immaculate High School, 73 Southern Blvd., Danbury, CT 06810, a portion of which will be allocated to the non-profit “She’s the First,” to help educate girls in the developing world.
