Screening of "Miss Representation" at Ridgefield Playhouse on Wednesday

The Girl Scouts of Connecticut (GSofCT) Ridgefield Service Unit invites the community to a screening of the documentary Miss Representation (PG-13 recommended). Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contributes to gender stereotyping and the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America.

The event will take place on Wednesday, April 30 at The Ridgefield Playhouse starting at 7pm. Tickets are $5 for students/$10 for adults and can be purchased in advance at Squash's Office Supply and Books on the Common in Ridgefield, as well as at the door. After the screening, there will be a discussion with panel speakers including Teresa Younger, Executive Director of Connecticut's Permanent Commission on the Status of Women, Mary Barnaby, CEO of GSofCT, and others led by television journalist Amanda Bergen.

The first ever showing of Miss Representation in Fairfield County was the brainchild of a group of thirty Girl Scouts at RHS. For the past 8 months, these girls have worked on a Girl Scout program entitled "Mission: Sisterhood", which addresses global issues impacting girls/women and finds ways to create real change. The group chose to explore topics such as equal access to education, positive body image and media stereotyping.

The Miss Representation message is: "You [girls] can't be what you can't see." The documentary has launched a social action campaign www.therepresentationproject.org, which seeks to empower women and girls by providing them with the voice and visibility to realize their full potential. Join us for the screening on April 30 sponsored by The Ridgefield Playhouse, League of Women Voters and Hamlet Hub.
