WCSU Department of Music to start fall season with celebration

A busy season of music performances begins this fall with the celebration of the 100th birthday of New York Philharmonic flutist Julius Baker as the Western Connecticut State University Department of Music presents a flute-piano recital at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Kerry Walker, on flute, and Linda Mark, on piano, will perform in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall in the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. For tickets, go to www.eventbrite.com or call (203) 837-8732.

Other upcoming music department events at the VPAC concert hall are as follows (please note that some performances are free and others require purchase of tickets, as noted):

Wednesday, Sept. 23: The U.S. Coast Guard Band will perform at 1 p.m. Free.

Wednesday, Sept. 30: WCSU faculty member and pianist Laurel Larsen will perform in a recital with guest artist and soprano Allyss Haecker at 1 p.m. Free.

Thursday, Oct. 1: The WCSU Faculty Jazz Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Cost.

Saturday, Oct. 3: “Love Wins! A Celebration of Food and Music to Benefit the Ana Grace Project” will be at 7 p.m. The event will feature internationally recognized French chef, television personality and author Jacques Pepin; Grammy award-winning vocalist Kurt Elling; 2010 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master pianist Kenny Barron; bassist John Patitucci; drummer Lewis Nash; and WCSU Assistant Professor of Music Jimmy Greene on saxophone. Proceeds will benefit the Ana Grace Scholarship at WCSU and the Ana Grace Project. Cost.

Monday, Oct. 19: Counter tenor Mikah Meyer will perform at 1 p.m. Free.

Wednesday, Oct. 21: Pianist Sarah Davis Buechner will perform in a concert at 1 p.m. Free.

Friday, Oct. 23: The WCSU Jazz Combos will perform at 8 p.m. Cost.

Sunday, Oct. 25: The WCSU Symphonic Band, conducted by Timothy Wiggins, and the New Music Ensemble, conducted by Fernando Jimenez, will perform at 3 p.m. Cost.

Friday, Oct. 30: Oktoberfest Jazz featuring Frankensax with Andrew Beals conducting, the WCSU Jazz Ensemble with Jimmy Greene conducting, and the WCSU Jazz Orchestra with Jamie Begian conducting will begin at 8 p.m. Cost.
