Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D Major is the fervent outpouring of a young romantic artist, full of youthful vigor, drama and magnificent melodies! Written for a large orchestra, the work concludes with a final movement that has been described as a storm dissolving into light.
Richard Strauss' Vier latest Lieder (Four Last Songs), for soprano and orchestra, were composed at the end of Strauss' life and contemplate the transfiguration and fulfillment of the soul after death. The orchestra will accompany acclaimed soprano Jennifer Black.
David Diamond's Music for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is tender and warm, with a true American flavor which gives Shakespeare's saga of star-crossed teenage lovers a lighter, more vibrant feel than other Romeo and Juliet scores.
The concert will be conducted by guest conductor Susanne Sheston. Her love of the music and her enthusiasm are infectious and we look forward to her interpretation of these outstanding works!
