Discovery Center wildflower program in Scott Nature Preserve in Redding on May 14

The Discovery Center at Ridgefield, is hosting wildflower program that is open to the public on Saturday, May 14th, starting at 1:15 P.M. in the Scott Nature Preserve Open Space located in West Redding.

Did you know that there is a native pink orchid in our area that blooms in May? Come join a naturalist guide in search of the Cypripedium acaule, commonly known as the Pink Lady’s Slipper or Moccasin Flower. It is found growing in acidic soils in the woodlands and bogs of CT. This beautiful wildflower is becoming difficult to find. It is a favorite food of deer. It is also losing ground to land development and people collecting it. In addition, the guides will look for other wildflowers like trillium, may apple, and solomon seal.

Please note this is a photo safari. No Picking or Returning to dig them up! Spring wildflowers are quickly disappearing from Connecticut's landscape. Lady Slippers in particular are becoming rare. They require special soil and don't survive transplanting.
Please note: Hike is of moderate difficulty over rocky and hilly terrain, approximately 2 miles

Where to Meet: Meet at 1:15 pm at the CVS/Ancona’s Wines parking lot at 720 Branchville Rd. in Ridgefield to carpool the short distance to the Scott Nature Preserve in Redding.

Participants should dress for the weather, wear good hiking shoes, and bring a camera! They may also want to bring binoculars and possibly insect repellent.

The program is free for Discovery Center members. For nonmembers, the charge is $7 per person. Registration is required. Visit the Discovery Center web site to register (http://www.ridgefielddiscovery.org/) or call 203-438-1063.
