Violinist Yevgeny Kutik Performs Bruch Violin Concerto No.1 in Debut with Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, Barbara Yahr, Conductor on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 8pm at Anne S. Richardson Auditorium at Ridgefield High School

On Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 8pm, Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik, known for his “dark-hued tone and razor-sharp technique” (The New York Times), will perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Ridgefield Symphony in the orchestra’s season opening concert with conductor Barbara Yahr. The program will also include Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 1, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World,” and the world premiere of Chris Brubeck’s Sphere of Influence, featuring SPHERE Performing Arts Group, a chorus of adults with a range of intellectual disabilities. This is Kutik’s debut with the Ridgefield Symphony.

Kutik has captivated audiences worldwide with an old-world sound that communicates a modern intellect. Praised for his technical precision and virtuosity, he is also lauded for his poetic and imaginative interpretations of standard works as well as rarely heard and newly composed repertoire. Kutik will release his next album, Words Failon Marquis Records on October 28, 2016(Album downloads available upon request).

Kutik’s most recent album, Music from the Suitcase: A Collection of Russian Miniatures (Marquis Classics 2015), features music he found in his family’s suitcase after immigrating to the United States from the Soviet Union in 1990. It debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard Classical chart and was featured on NPR's All Things Considered and in The New York Times. Kutik’s 2012 debut album, Sounds of Defiance, features the music of Achron, Pärt, Schnittke, and Shostakovich.

Highlights of Kutik’s current season include his South African debut with the Cape Town Philharmonic, his debuts with the Dayton Philharmonic and Asheville Symphony, and performances with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MA) and Springfield Symphony (MO). Highlights of his recitals this season include a concert at National Sawdust in New York and a Milton Academy Gratwick Concert with members of the Boston Symphony.

Yevgeny Kutik made his major orchestral debut in 2003 with Keith Lockhart and The Boston Pops as the winner of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition. In 2006, he was awarded the Salon de Virtuosi Grant as well as the Tanglewood Music Center Jules Reiner Violin Prize. He was a featured performer for the 2012 March of the Living observances, where he played for audiences at the Krakow Opera House and for over 10,000 people at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

A native of Minsk, Belarus, Kutik immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of five. He is an advocate for the Jewish Federations of North America, the organization that assisted his family in coming to the US, and regularly speaks and performs across the United States to promote the assistance of refugees from around the world.

Kutik began violin studies with his mother, Alla Zernitskaya, and went on to study with Zinaida Gilels, Shirley Givens, Roman Totenberg, and Donald Weilerstein. Kutik holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory and lives in Boston. His violin was made in Italy in 1915 by Stefano Scarampella.
