Artists Reception: Transformations Through Paint by The Watercolor Group

Transformations Through Paint, an exhibition of the Watercolor Group opens at the Ridgefield Library on September 20, with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.  The exhibition will run through October 29 in the Gallery on the Library's Lower Level.

Just before 2000, Sally Aldrich, a Ridgefield artist painter and sculptor began teaching a watercolor class on Thursdays as part of the Continuing Education program.  The class grew, and students began finding their own voice as painters.  The Ridgefield Library has hosted three exhibitions of the groups work, beginning in 2004.  While many have gone on to exhibit through the Mark Twain Library’s annual juried shows, Silvermine’s Student Exhibitions, and the New Pond Farm’s annual spring exhibition, new students have joined the group, which still meets on Thursdays, but now at Sally Aldrich’s home and studio.

Speaking of her work, Ferne Kawahara says, “the goal in all my watercolors is to produce a painting that is representational but evocative of a place or mood.”  Michelle Brewster states, “I have painted since childhood, age six.  Painting watercolors for me is a form of meditation.  I paint from the heart, trying different techniques to achieve what I feel.”  Another student, Mary Pat Devine has evolved from her style of representational watercolors to organic abstracts, with inspiration from microscopic photography in her molecular series. Madyn Gwynne creates an exciting series of vegetable forms.  Other artists participating in this year’s exhibition include Dak Harris, Ann Tetelman, and Emily Pogers.
