With a style similar to that of the Goo Goo Dolls, Better Than Ezra helped pave the way for lots of alt-pop acts of the late '90s by merging college rock influences with mainstream aspirations. The band was formed by four students from Louisiana State University who played college bars and frat houses. They received positive press for their first cassette-tape recording, "Surprise." After one member passed away, the boys disbanded and reunited as a trio. Their 1993 independent album Deluxe, featuring the hit single "Good," reached Platinum status after being re-issued by Elektra records. Today's band of friends are Kevin Griffin on lead vocals and guitar, Tom Drummond on bass and vocal backups and Michael Jerome on drums.
