School Starts with a BIG CHILL for Veterans Park Teachers

While a few days of summer remain for Ridgefield Public School students, teachers and staff were back in full force today for Professional Development Day.

The teachers and staff at one Ridgefield school stayed beyond the final bell so they could show their support for ALS

"We did a large group Ice Bucket Challenge in support of one of our staff member, Angela Cardoano, who is a cook in our kitchen. Her husband, Juan Cardoano, is suffering from ALS," said Principal Lisa Singer.

Second grade teacher, Joy Craig, addressed the VP family, who were adorned in matching black and white "VP Teacher" shirts. "Angela's husband has ALS," said Craig. "We are doing this in honor of him," said the teary-eyed teacher as she hugged Angela.

And then, in a wave, came the big chill. Teachers and staff stood in solidarity, shoulder to shoulder, pouring bucket after bucket of ice cold water over their heads.

"VP CARES is our motto and this is an example of how we care for our community, said Singer. The teachers saved one bucket from the ice and water so they could collect donations for the ALS Foundation.
