Snow update: forecast, accidents & more

Ridgefield looks picturesque today as snow falls steadily blanketing the ground with a few fresh, white inches. Schools closed early and after-school activities have been cancelled. Tonight's Board of Education meeting has been cancelled, the new date has not yet been set.

Ridgefield Police are reporting some minor weather related accidents. "We have had four accidents and a three vehicles off the road that required assistance," said Ridgefield Police Captain Jeff Kreitz. While Police are reporting mostly wet roadways Kreitz warns, "Drivers should use caution because there are slick spots."

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security has issued the following forecast:

Light snow is expected in Western and Central CT with light to moderate bands of snow in Eastern CT during the afternoon.  A few inches of accumulation are expected on roads and bridges by 3:00 PM in Western and Central CT with several inches of accumulation possible in Eastern CT.  In general the major highways are expected to be lightly snow and slush covered with more cover on secondary roads.  Temperatures are forecast to be in the mid 20’s.  The impact on the afternoon rush hour is expected to be minor in Western CT, Minor to Moderate in Central CT and moderate in Eastern CT.  Some power outages are expected to occur especially in Eastern CT where some limbs were weakened by last weeks’ storm.  However this snow is forecast to be dryer than the last storm, therefore significant tree damage and large scale power outages are not expected.

This Evening…A band of light snow is expected to continue across Eastern CT early this evening before dissipating by 9:00 PM.  Total snowfall for today is still forecast to range from 2" - 4" in Western CT, 3" - 5" in Central CT and 5" - 7" in Eastern CT.  Accumulations on roadways are expected to be somewhat less than on grassy surfaces.

Tonight thru Wednesday Night...Occasional light snow is expected to continue for a few days as a weak low pressure system forms along the mid-Atlantic Coast and lingers in our area for up to 48 hours.  Total accumulations during this 2-day period are expected to generally range from 1 - 3 inches across the state.
