The Story Behind the Perfect Prom Picture

Everybody knows it takes a lot of effort to get ready for prom, but how much time does it really take?

Planning starts months in advance. Many girls begin shopping for a dress months before prom. Every year the girls at Ridgefield High School create a Facebook group where they post their dresses to make sure there is no overlap. This year it was created at the beginning of February, about 4 months before prom. The dress is just the beginning. Because Senior Prom calls for a long dress, many people will have to get their dresses tailored. This can take a lot of time. Some places can take multiple weeks because of the increased demand for dresses to be tailored during prom season. Along with focusing on the dress, people spend hours searching for the perfect shoes and accessories to complete their look. The day itself also requires a lot of effort including preparing your hair, makeup, and nails.

One of the most important parts of prom prep is the art of the perfect hair.

To get an idea of how the process works, we followed our fellow intern Anna to her appointment at Hair Couture for the St. Luke's Prom last Friday, May 27. Anna wanted to figure out what hairstyle looks best with their dress before the appointment. She decided she wanted a boho style, so she found a picture online of a messy bun with a braid and showed the stylist, Melanie.

Her stylist, feeling inspired by Anna’s pictures, went to work. While she was creating Anna’s look, we discovered that she didn’t always want to be a hair stylist. In high school, she wanted to be a makeup artist, but decided to go to hair school, so she could be certified in a profession. Melanie found her love for working with hair while she was there. Even though Anna showed a picture to Melanie, she personalized the look to Anna’s hair type. Melaine did an amazing job. We were very impressed by the speed and the quality of the hair style.

Anna decided to do her own makeup, and it looked beautiful. With her hair and makeup done, all Anna had left to do was put on her dress to be picture ready.
