Be A #RebelReader: Ridgefield Library Celebrates Banned Books Week!

This year's Banned Books Week celebration of the freedom to read is September 24-30.

To raise awareness of the effects of censorship on communities, the Ridgefield Library is featuring an interactive "Get Caught Reading a Banned Book" display. Patrons may take a selfie, or pose for a photo in front of a "mugshot" backdrop with a favorite challenged or banned book. Check our displays or browse banned book lists at our service desk to help make a selection - you may be surprised at some of the titles on the list. The Library encourages patrons and visitors to share their images on social media with the hashtags: #rebelreader and #ireadbannedbooks.

Banned Books Week Teen Read-In
In honor of all the books that have been banned or challenged we invite teens to come to the Ellis Family Teen Center between the hours of 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM for a read-in. Hunker down and grab a comfy chair because we are turning off the Nintendo Switch and transforming the space into a quiet reading oasis.  No registration necessary. This is a drop-in program.

According to the American Library Association (ALA), Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers — in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

The Global Literature in Libraries Initiative shines a light on YA books that have been challenged both in the U.S. and abroad. Click here to learn more.
