Updated SNOW Forecast for Connecticut

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for southern New Haven, Middlesex, New London and Windham counties for today and this evening.  Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the rest of the state.

At 10:00 AM radar showed a band of light to occasionally moderate snow across central Connecticut.  Temperatures currently range from near 30 F in the NW Hills up to 35 F along the southeast coast.  As this band of light snow begins to spread out across the state over the next hour temperatures will drop a few degrees into the upper 20's in northern CT and low 30's along the coast.  The following forecast is based on a blend of the GFS, NAM and HRRR models:

Rest of This Morning: Light snow becoming steadier by noon as the snow spreads into the southeast and northwest corners of the state.  Only a very minor impact on morning travel is expected with wet roads.

This Afternoon: Moderate snow is expected to fall across most of the state.  The HRRR model is indicating that a heavy band of snow may impact southeastern CT between 1:00 - 3:00 PM.  Total accumulations by late this afternoon are expected to range from around an inch in the NW Hills up to 4" in southeastern CT (half the accumulation on treated roads).  Some sleet or rain may mix in briefly at the southeast CT coast at times.  A minor to moderate impact is expected on travel with highs holding in the upper 20's in northern CT and in the low 30’s in southern CT.

This Evening and Overnight: Moderate snow during this evening is forecast to taper off to light snow by 9:00 PM.  A moderate impact on evening travel is expected with snow covered roads in many towns.  Light snow is expected to continue for a few hours and end by 2:00 AM with lows in the upper 20’s.  Total accumulations are forecast to range from 2” – 3” in the NW Hills, 4” – 6” across most of the rest of the state with isolated amounts over 6” in the Northeast Hills and far eastern CT.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to closely monitor this storm and will send out another update at 5:15 PM this afternoon.
