WCSU music camps to offer free concerts

Western Connecticut State University will host musicians in grades five through 12 for two weeks this month at summer music camps that will focus on improving the skills of string and band musicians. Students will audition for ensemble placement at the beginning of the programs and will work with peers of similar musical abilities under the tutelage of camp faculty members. The programs will culminate in three concerts to showcase what the students have achieved during the programs.

The first of the weeklong camps is the Summer Strings program for string instrument players, running from July 13 - 19. The second program, Summer Band, runs from July 20 - 26, and is tailored to band instrumentalists. Both camps include ensemble practice sessions during the day, camp choir, outdoor sports, movies and performances by faculty members. Students have the option of commuting to campus each day or residing in one of the university residence halls.

The student concerts will be free and the public is invited. All performances will be at Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury.

The concert schedule includes:

* Saturday, July 19, noon - Strings

* Friday, July 25, 7 p.m. - Jazz

* Saturday, July 26, noon - Drum ensemble, concert bands, jazz ensembles
