U.S. Diplomat to discuss career in foreign service at WCSU

U.S. State Department diplomat William Stewart has spent most of the past 30 years serving in critical and often volatile areas of the Middle East, in addition to serving at the U.S. Embassies in Egypt, Canada and Sweden. Later this month, Stewart will share his political knowledge and expertise at a talk at Western Connecticut State University.

At noon on Wednesday, Feb. 25, Stewart will present “Careers in Diplomacy: Internship and Job Opportunities at the Department of State.” The discussion, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Warner Hall Lyceum 102 on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury.

“I hope he inspires our students, especially those interested in political science, to pursue careers in politics, to get involved and be engaged citizens, and to think about America’s role globally,” said WCSU Professor of Political Science and Conflict Studies Dr. R. Averell Manes. “This is a good opportunity for them to understand how politics is relevant to their lives and will hopefully encourage them to educate themselves more about political issues that are close to home or thousands of miles away.”

Stewart retired from the U.S. Department of State in 2013 as a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. His final assignment was a Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. He was also a visiting professor and diplomat in residence at the University of Texas at Austin where he taught a graduate course on U.S. Diplomacy.
