MARCH EVENTS

 THROUGH  MAR. 7   100@100 EXHIBITIONThe WCSU Department of Art will present the “100@100 Exhibition” in the Art Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. The artwork will be on view during gallery hours (noon to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday) through Thursday, March 5. THROUGH MAR. 8    THEATRE PRODUCTION: The WCSU Department of Theatre Arts will present “You Can’t Take It With You” in the MainStage Theatre of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Performances will be at 8 p.m. on March 6 & 7; with 2 p.m. matinees on March 7 and 8. The play introduces audiences to the freethinking, eccentric Sycamore family and the mayhem that ensues when their daughter’s fiance brings his conservative, straight-laced parents to dinner on the wrong night. This Pulitzer Prize-winning, uproarious family affair is set in pre-depression New York (1936-37), and features comedic fun for the whole family. Directed by John Hickok. MAR. 4           WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH LECTURE: Adjunct Professor of Writing, Linguistics and Creative Process Dr. Jeanne Lakatos will discuss “The Semiotic Theory of Iconic Realism in Women’s Artistic Expression” at 12:15 p.m. in Room 508 of the Ruth Haas Library on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. MAR. 4           JAMES FURMAN SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION FINAL ROUND: WCSU will host the James Furman Scholarship Competition final round at 12:30 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. MAR. 5           NATIONAL BROADCASTING SOCIETY LECTURE: The National Broadcasting Society will present a lecture by professional sound man Carmine Picarello at 5 p.m. in Room 012 of the Higgins Annex on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Picarello is the soundman and mixer for “Project Runway,” “The Following,” “American Chopper,” “Forgetting the Girl” and more. MAR. 7           CLEP TESTING: The WCSU Testing Center will host a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test at 9 a.m. in the Computer Center of the Campus Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. CLEP exams provide the opportunity to receive college credit for knowledge already acquired. The exam is open to the public. MAR. 7           BONE MARROW DONOR DRIVE: The WCSU Department of Nursing, Julia’s Wings Foundation and Delete Blood Cancer DKMS will hold a Bone Marrow Donor Drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 212/214 of the Campus Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Every year, more than 14,000 people in the United States find themselves in need of a bone marrow transplant and 70 percent of them will not find a match within their immediate family and will have to rely on an unrelated donor from the national registry. MAR. 11         WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH LECTURE: Assistant Professor of Social Sciences Dr. Jeannie Hatcherson will discuss “Working in an International Leadership Program for Women” at 11 a.m. in Room 202 of the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Hatcherson will share her experiences working at GLOW in Bulgaria. In 2000, Camp GLOW was established by Peace Corps volunteers. While the Peace Corps is no longer in Bulgaria, GLOW continues and has been honored by the U.S. State Department for its success. Today, Leadership Academy GLOW is an all-female run, volunteer organization. Through a one-week peer leadership experience, GLOW alumni continue their mission of empowering and educating young Bulgarian girls. MAR. 11         STUDY-ABROAD INFORMATION SESSION: WCSU will present information about summer study-abroad opportunities in Spain at 12:30 p.m. in Warner Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The study-abroad program allows students to earn six credits in just four weeks while being completely immersed in Spanish language and culture. Classes fulfill general education and language requirements. The information session will be free and the public is invited. MAR. 24         TOUR OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS CENTER: Luigi Marcone, associate vice president for facilities at WCSU, will lead a tour of the new building that houses the Theatre, Music and Art departments to highlight the many environmentally sound techniques that were incorporated into its construction. The tour will begin at 1 p.m. in the center hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. MAR. 27–29   OPERA: The WCSU Opera Ensemble will present “The Tender Land” by Aaron Copland at 8 p.m. on March 27 and 28, and 3 p.m. on March 29, in the MainStage Theatre of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Copland’s folk opera is a depression-era coming-of-age story about a young woman growing up in the American heartland. Full of soaring Copland melodies including the well-known “The Promise of Living,” it is also laced with McCarthy era political references and jabs, which early audiences found shocking. “The Tender Land” premiered 60 years ago at New York City Opera. APR. 7            WESTCONN SOCIETY LUNCHEON: Businesswoman MaryJean Rebeiro will be honored with the WCSU Foundation’s Community Service Award for her commitment to Danbury and organizations that benefit a wide range of residents at the 34th annual WestConn Society luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the Ethan Allen Hotel, 21 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. APR. 17–19    CONSIGNMENT EVENT: The Connecticut Kids Closet will hold a spring consignment event in the Feldman Arena of the O’Neill Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. From 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, there will be a pre-sale for charity. Entry will be gained with a $10 donation or a bag of nonperishable groceries. The public will be admitted for free from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. APR. 19          CHUCK’S MINI-MUDDER: The WCSU Recreation Office, Health Promotion and Exercise Sciences Department and the Student Government Association will host “Chuck’s Mini-Mudder” on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. in the Westside Athletic Complex. Heats will begin at 8 a.m. and will occur in 15-minute intervals. The event will begin and end on the turf field of the stadium and will include 15 physical challenges over the course of two miles. Water stations will be available during the course. Registration is $15 per person before April 4 and $20 per person after April 4. WCSU students can participate for free with valid I.D. The first 250 preregistered participants will receive commemorative headbands.  APR. 23–25    JAZZ FESTIVAL: The 20th Annual WCSU Jazz Festival will include three evening concerts in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall in the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension  in Danbury. WCSU jazz faculty and select student groups will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday. A guest artist will perform at 7 p.m. on Friday.
