Mary Jane O’Rourke Wilkinson Barnett
Mary Jane O’Rourke Wilkinson Barnett was the daughter of Mabel Guerin and John Martin O'Rourke. Jane – as her friends knew her – was from a family of pioneers and builders that settled in White Plains from Ireland in 1853. She is predeceased by husband Peter Carter Wilkinson (army veteran of the Korean war) and Anthony Barnett.
Jane was born on May 22 in 1929, at the beginning of the Great Depression. In 1945 she ventured west to UCLA, eventually becoming an English teacher for the New York State Education system.
As an educator, Jane dedicated her life to serving disabled children. As an individual, Jane’s personal time was spent as enthusiastically as it was varied. She was a dedicated mother and wife, avid athletic and social supporter, worthy adversary in any card-game, accomplished linguist, passionate follower and commentator of political and world events and a razor-sharp wit. Perhaps most memorably, though, she was a loving family member and friend.
She is survived by her family: Peter Hawley Wilkinson (Annette), Paul Christopher Wilkinson (Ellyn), Patricia Catherine Wilkinson, Pamela Wilkinson Vita (Don) and her grandchildren Nicholas Hawley Vita, Jenna Alexandra Wilkinson, Adrienne Carter Vita, Carter James Wilkinson, Haleigh Acton Vita, Sean O'Rourke Wilkinson, James O'Connor Wilkinson and Claire Patrice Wilkinson.
In honor of Jane’s efforts in life as a volunteer fundraiser for the Special Olympics, the family kindly asks donations be made in Jane’s name to the Special Olympic Charity fund in lieu of flowers.
Viewing and rosary service will take place at Kane Funeral Home, Ridgefield on Thursday, July 2, 2015 from 5:30-7:30PM
