Ridgefield Women's March on Washington Group Adds 5th Bus

We have just learned that not four but FIVE Coach buses carrying hundreds of residents will depart from Ridgefield High School on January 21 in the wee hours of the morning (2:45 am to be exact) and make their way our nation’s capital. "The St. Mary's bus is joining us," said Ridgefield March organizer, Jessica Mancini.

Part of a national movement and in the spirit of democracy, the Women’s March on Washington mission is to honor the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice. “We join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore. The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us,” they explain.

The Ridgefield Chapter of the Women’s March on Washington was launched by Jessica Mancini and Aimee Berger-Girvalo. “We created a Facebook group almost immediately after hearing about the March so we could gauge interest. says Aimee. And interest was high among locals.

“Not only are we using our group to organize for [Women's March on Washington] January 21, but also to provide members with ways to get and stay active as citizens and participants in our government,” she adds.

After spending about eight hours in Washington, march participants from Ridgefield will head back home. “Our return trip is scheduled for 5pm that day, arriving in Ridgefield at about 11:10pm,” says Aimee.

Aimee and Jessica intend to use the Women’s March on Washington as a springboard for continued citizen involvement. “Not only are we using our group to organize for January 21, but also to provide members with ways to get and stay active as citizens and participants in our government,” says Aimee.

Also taking place on January 21 are “Sister Marches”, one of which is at UConn Stamford. According to March on Washington official website, 694,408 individuals are expected to participate in 370 of these satellite, volunteer-lead marches.

The Women’s March on Washington is a grassroots effort comprised of dozens of independent coordinators at the state level. The official website states, “The effort is helmed by four national co-chairs and a national coordinating committee who are working around the clock to pull it all together.”

Honorary Co-Chairs of the Women’s March on Washington are political activist, Gloria Steinem  and social activist and actor, Harry Belafonte.
