Talented figure skater who has overcome tremendous obstacles, 12 year old Lauren Toia of Ridgefield is ShopRite Nutmeg State Games "2016 Athlete of the Year". Toia will be recognized for this prestigious honor at the National Congress of State Games (NCSG) symposium.

Nutmeg State Games writes, "Most nominations for the Athlete of the Year Award are sent from deservedly proud parents, family members, and coaches. But when a nomination comes in for an Athlete of the Year with supporting letters from National and International Champions, World Competitors AND Olympians one cannot help but take notice. Such is the case of the nomination for Lauren Toia, a very talented 12 year old Figure Skating athlete."

Toia has encountered several medical setbacks including a sudden brain hemorrhage that left her unable to to eat, talk and walk. She persevered again and again, committed to regaining her stamina and top-notch skating ability. She is a shining example to all! Read Lauren's story here.

"All across the nation in State Games from Maine to California, amateur athletes of all ages and skill levels compete to bring home the gold.  Every year, a few rise to the top, excelling in their events, overcoming great hardships, displaying tremendous sportsmanship, athleticism and determination.  Each state has the opportunity to honor a male and female stand-out athlete with the distinction of Athlete of the Year," says the Nutmeg State Games.

According to the Athlete of the Year Committee, state winners personify the ideals of the State Games movement: participation and achievement, sportsmanship, good attitude and effort and special attributes within the sport/community will then have their nominations sent to be considered by the National Congress of State Games (NCSG) for the National Athlete of the Year Award.

The Nutmeg State Games is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to providing a forum that initiates and encourages camaraderie between different ages, socioeconomic and cultural groups through athletic competition and the Olympic spirit.
