HamletHub interviews real estate powerhouse & community lover, Karla Murtaugh

Longtime resident, Karla Murtaugh is part of the fabric of Ridgefield. And not just because she is an expert when it comes to the nooks and crannies of the local real estate scene. "I’ve pretty much sold every type of property there is - from a cozy one bedroom lake cabin to an almost $14 million estate and everything in-between," she explains. Murtaugh also rolls up her sleeves to help local causes and nonprofits including the Boys & Girls Club of Ridgefield, Run Like A Mother, and Tiger Hollow.

Here, we talk with Murtaugh about the successful real estate business she has built and nurtured for fifteen years and her unwavering love for our community and her fellow neighbor.

Favorite part of your job?

I get to meet some of the most wonderful people moving into town, moving around town and moving out of town.  That’s also the hardest part - it’s often sad to see people I have become close to over the years leave Ridgefield as their lives take a different direction.

You have made a significant community impact, not just in real estate, but in local nonprofits. Tell me about this.

My husband Greg and I believe that it is so important to give back to the community that supports us. I’ve met so many cool people and feel fortunate to be in the position to be able to make a difference.  But everyone can make a difference by giving their time and energy.  There are so many terrific organizations in the town who benefit from individuals getting involved such as The Boy & Girls Club of Ridgefield, the RVNA, the Prospector Theatre, the Ridgefield Library, the Playhouse, Tiger Hollow, and so many others.  I feel like you need to find your passion - discover what makes you happy when you donate your time or money - and just get involved.

Fastest you’ve sold a home?

I’ve sold a few homes before they even hit the market!  Sometimes it just comes together that way.

Any crazy real estate stories?

There’s always crazy stories, but I always prefer the ones with a little surprise in store. A family I was working with purchased a wonderful home in Ridgefield. They ended up selling the home a few years later. Lo and behold, the original homeowners whom they purchased that home from came back to Ridgefield right as we put the house on the market.  They ended up buying back their old house!!  How cool is that?

What do you do for fun?

I like to play paddle tennis and tennis in general.  I also like to escape to the beach and spend time with my boys.

Biggest real estate surprise?

My biggest surprise came when I was listing Millstone Farm in Wilton.  I never realized just how many buyers there were looking for a $6-million, 71-acre working farm!! We had multiple offers with buyers coming from everywhere - NYC, down county and Ridgefield itself.

Anything you wish I asked?

Yes - people always ask me how I get everything done and offer the level of service I do.  Quite honestly, it’s because I have an amazing team. Anyone who’s worked with us knows how passionate we all are and how hard we work to make sure every buyer or seller feels valued and important.
