For all the time you've invested during the past school year to help your child improve in the classroom, now is the best time to look for ways to improve education away from school during summer months.

Research has long shown a 'summer slide' occurs for those students who don't remain academically challenged in summer; as much as one to three months of academic progress can be lost in the course of a summer free of learning.

For some, the learning loss is cumulative; for example, students who lose reading skills every summer can fall as much as two full years behind classmates by the end of sixth grade.

Summer months offer many ways for you to become more educationally engaged with your child as well as have fun.

A few simple steps you can take every day will go a long way in strengthening your child's academic interests and reducing the risks of summer learning loss.

Start a Summer Garden

Start in your own backyard, encourage your child to help plan a garden as well as seed and tend the plants. Calculate and record growing times. Identify and research the creatures found in your yard and garden, like birds, squirrels, worms, lady bugs or other insects.

Take a Summer Excursion

Visit farmer's markets to learn more about growing plants, fruits and vegetables. Plan a trip to local nature centers to learn about plants and species that are native to your area or noxious plants to avoid.

Keep a Summer Journal

Take photos and notes to tell the story of your summer outdoor experiences. Record dates and times, people you meet, and individual lessons learned through each summer activity. It's a nice way to remember the good times of summer as well.

Build a Summer Project

Whether it's a new bird house or backyard fort, ask your children what summer building projects would be of most interest to them. Research the projects together online, develop a list of the correct construction materials, and create a building blueprint.

Host a Summer Party

Don't forget summer is a time for play too, so encourage your child to host a neighborhood party for a few friends or family. Planning the event, creating invitations, preparing treats and party games are all part of learning socialization skills and keeping your child's brain constructively engaged.

Make a Summer Budget

Summer learning activities don't have to be expensive; preparing a budget helps keep it that way. Whether it's a farmer's market, public library or museum, many local excursions are free; and you can probably find materials for most projects around your garage or through second hand sources.

Create a Summer Connection

Perhaps most valuable for parents, summer time is when your children have more time to spend with you. When you plan excursions and explore projects together, you're investing in a personal learning experience that will pay dividends for you and your child for years to come.
