Summer at Wooster Session Four Highlights

Last week marked the largest session of the season for Summer at Wooster. Despite the heat, Session Four campers stayed cool and kept hydrated throughout the day with a variety of water activities including water polo, free swim, slip n’ slide baseball, and other sprinkler games. Campers were especially excited to see the infamous slip n’ slide debut last week. At thirty feet long, the slip n’ slide can be spotted from all over campus sprawling down the hill overlooking the baseball field and is always a favorite amongst campers. Even a few counselors and Camp Director Brian Hastings took a turn on the slide on one of the hottest afternoons.

As they do every week, Pre-K and Kindergarten campers enjoyed Water Wednesday under the sprinkler to stay cool. The structure of the Mighty Explorers program remains consistent throughout the summer. However each week, campers focus on a different unit, ranging from Summer Safari to Building Buddies. This week, Mighty Explorers dove into the world of Barefoot Botany where they explored the Wooster School Community Garden and then planted their own seeds. In the classroom, campers constructed a flower delivery truck from cardboard boxes, painted their own still-life rendition of sunflowers, and read books focusing on flowers and plant-life.

In the Makerspace, campers in Woodworking had the opportunity for the first time to work with power tools throughout the week while they constructed homemade gumball machines. “I think children are really surprised that they’re able to use the tools here so they’re very patient and responsible because they really want to learn,” says Woodworking instructor, Kim Gerardi. Indeed, the atmosphere of the Makerspace is one composed of diligence, focus, and excitement.

The Black Box, too, was a site of diligence and focus last week; campers who signed up for Performing Arts in grades 6-8 auditioned for this summer’s musical, Cinderella. Last week was the first of the two-week long, full-day program, and under the direction of Andy Barrett, campers didn’t waste any time getting started on this large undertaking. The cast completed a full run-through of the production, began costuming, and finished the construction of the pumpkin stage coach. Campus is abuzz this week with pre-show excitement as the rest of camp eagerly awaits their role of audience in Cinderella on Friday.

There is still time to enroll your camper! Summer at Wooster runs through August 12, 2016. To learn more about Summer at Wooster, please visit http://summeratwooster.org.
