Wooster School Adding Boys Hockey in 2017-2018

Head of School Matt Byrnes has announced that Wooster School will add ice hockey to expand the school’s winter sport offerings, and meet the demand for the sport within the existing Wooster community. “We have a core group of dedicated hockey players who would love to play for their school. So with the numbers we now have, it was the right time. We’re excited about providing every hockey player and fan in the Wooster community with an opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of the sport through a school program,” remarked Byrnes.

It’s been more than 30 years since Wooster students have worn a Wooster hockey sweater. Before then, Wooster skated on “the pond” and boasted a number of championships - even undefeated teams. The current plan calls for Wooster to suit up a Junior Varsity Boys team in the winter of 2017, followed by a Varsity Boys team in 2018. The school is also hoping to field a Junior Varsity Girls team within the next three years as well.

Wooster has hired Rob Sutherland, an experienced, local coach to manage and develop the new team. Rob played hockey for Immaculate High School in Danbury and Perkiomen Valley High School in Pennsylvania, earning a Division 2 State Championship in 2007 with Immaculate. He then went on to Juniors where he played for the Valley Forge Minutemen, the South Muskoka Shield of the GMHL, and the Bradford Rattlers of the GMHL. While with South Muskoka, Rob was a three-year All Star and awarded the Goaltender of the Year in 2011. Rob is a Level 3 USA Hockey certified coach and has spent the past three seasons with the Connecticut Barons coaching at the Squirt and Bantam levels before joining The Ridgefield Amateur Hockey Association (RAHA) for the 2016-17 season.

The Generals will likely skate at one of the local rinks - Winter Garden Ice Arena (Ridgefield, CT), Danbury Ice Arena, or Brewster Ice Arena.
