Ridgefield Montessori School: A New Logo, Same Philosophy

As parents, we all want our children to be exposed to the wonders of the world, to build curiosity and love learning. In the heart of Ridgefield, tucked away in a quiet space are a group of educators whose main mission is just that – to instill in a child the curiosity necessary to pursue an individualized education.

The Ridgefield Montessori School (RMS) was established in 1999 and what started as a small group of 12 students has now grown to 4 classrooms of 75 students under the administration of Founder and Director, Catherine Tango-Dykes. The school offers Toddler, Early Education, and Kindergarten programs for children ages 18 months to 6 years old.

RMS bases its core philosophy in the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori who discovered that the secret to joyful learning lies within the experience rather than in the facts. The Montessori method aims at molding the education around the child’s own development and interest rather than having a set curriculum for all. One can almost think of it as a customized educational experience that supports each child’s natural interests and development. Children learn through their own practice and at their own pace.

RMS parents, Maria Olson Goins of LivLuna and William Goins of GoShow Entertainment helped redesign the school’s brand to reiterate its heritage and philosophy. They also created a video to demystify the Montessori method and give a unique insight into the incredible experience these children have. "We have been so impressed with how our child has flourished at the school that we wanted to help educate others about what makes RMS different, and how this curriculum is really unparalleled in early childhood education.” said Maria Olson Goins.

The school’s new logo is represented by a rounded-arched window and a growing tree in the middle. The window symbolizes the church which had housed the school during its initial years and also serves as the broad perspective of the world that the school aims to provide its students with. The tree in the center represents both how the school has grown through the years as well as how the children flourish. A link to the video can be found in the RMS homepage - http://ridgefieldmontessori.com. In the brief 5 minutes, we get a snapshot into the daily lives of the children as well as the dedication behind the teachers who are committed to laying a strong foundation and cultivating the joy of learning in their students.

A wonderful quote from the video by Ms. Gill, a head teacher in the school’s Early Education and Kindergarten program, perfectly sums up the passion that drives her and many alike - “I have loved watching children learn to love learning, to become these independent self-directed souls that we send out into the world, and I know that they've had such a great start to their life."

Be it through the Montessori method or the traditional classroom method, the goal is to make a child’s learning process joyful. Picking a school or method of education is one of the most important duties of a parent. We want our children to not only learn about core subjects but also responsibility, compassion for others and self-motivation. “I’ve had the pleasure of having both my children go through the full Montessori program at RMS and they both have grown and developed into strong, independent individuals and the confidence is amazing!” said Ena Bhagat Puri, a long time RMS parent and proponent of the Montessori method.

The Montessori method may or may not be for you and your child but if you are curious to learn more, please feel free to visit the RMS website at http://ridgefieldmontessori.com/ or give the school a call at (203) 438-4506.
