Ridgefield Library Happenings: Solar Eclipse, Art Walk & More

Solar Eclipes Viewing Party on Monday, August 21 in the Dayton Program Room

A rare astronomical phenomenon is coming on Monday, August 21st, and the Ridgefield Library, Parks and Recreation Department and The Discovery Center invite you to be part of it! Join us for a viewing of the first total eclipse of the sun viewable in the continental United States in 40 years.
The day will start at the Library with a drop-in storytime with an astronomical theme at 10:30 AM for children ages 3 and up, followed by an educational presentation by Cliff Wattley or the Discovery Center at 12 noon. Activities will then continue from 1:00 - 4:00 PM in Ballard Park with educational presentations, crafts, games, music with a DJ, a solar system scavenger hunt and viewing of the eclipse with special safe viewing glasses provided by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Space Science Institute.

Throughout the day, you can visit the Library to view footage on a big screen of the eclipse as it travels across the country and to enjoy displays and activities, including a pop-up used book sale of related materials by the Friends of the Library. While only part of the country will experience a total blackout, the NYC metro region, including Western Connecticut, is expected to reach its peak eclipse coverage (around 75%) at app. 2:45 PM. Activities are open to all ages, and family participation is encouraged!  Bring a blanket and lunch and enjoy one last lazy summer afternoon before school starts. Please note: eclipse viewing glasses will only be available at this event.  We will not be distributing them in advance or at other locations.

No registration - just report to the gazebo in Ballard Park starting at 1:00 PM to receive your free glasses and instruction on safe viewing.

Art Walk Opening @ the Library
Friday, August 25, 5:00 - 8:00 PM Artists Reception
Saturday, August 26, 12:00 - 4:00 PM Meet the Artist

The featured artist for this year's Art Walk being co-sponsored by the Ridgefield Library and the Ridgefield Guild of Artists is book artist Chris Perry. Perry's work will be on display in the Library's Ruggles Fine Art Reading Room in the Morris building through September 8th.

After graduating from Maryland Institute College of Art, Chris Perry moved to New York to begin work at the Guggenheim Museum and later as an assistant for a sculptor. He taught himself book binding out of a need to present a completed work to a potential publisher as an example of exactly how he expected a finished project to work and look. The process of bookmaking soon took over the painting that he had been trained for and now takes up all of his time. He has work in the permanent collections at Yale University Gallery of Art as well as several other public collections. He has shown in many venues across the country.

Art Walk is an initiative for artists to display their work in unique out-of-gallery settings.
