FREE Internet Safety Program for Adults

The Ridgefield Police Department and Ridgefield Public Schools have partnered together to present a free community program called, "Internet Safety – What Parents Need to Know." This event will take place on Tuesday, April 22. It will be located at the Ridgefield Playhouse and will begin at 7 p.m.

The presentation is intended to educate parents about current trends in social media. It will include a wide range of social media programs that children are using today such as Snap Chat, Instagram, Ask.fm and Oovoo. Additionally, other safety concerns, such as privacy when taking smart phone pictures and other social networking areas like Xbox Live will be covered. The presenter, Detective R. Scott Sear, works for the Wilton Police Department in Wilton, CT and has been in law enforcement for over 21 years. Currently assigned to the department's Detective Division, he investigates all types of criminal complaints in addition to computer crime incidents. He has worked closely with parents educating them on safety around 21st century technologies both in his current role as well as in his previous role as a School Resource Officer. As an SRO, he worked with high school students in many areas that include providing direct instruction as part of the high school health curriculum. Detective Sear is a member of the Connecticut Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and he currently specializes in computer forensics. Formerly, he was the Regional Liaison Officer for Fairfield County to the Connecticut Intelligence Center (2009-2012), as well as he has worked closely with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

Following this very informative presentation a panel of educators and law enforcement personnel will be available to answer your questions. The panel will consist of the Ridgefield Police Department Youth Officer and School Resource Officers along with school personnel representing all grade levels.
