As Huskies face the Fighting Irish, Governors Malloy and Pence make friendly wager

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana have waged a friendly bet on behalf of their respective women's basketball teams as they go head-to-head in tonight's NCAA Women's National Championship Game.

The No. 1 UConn Huskies play the No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. This is the first time in women or men NCAA Division I history that two undefeated teams have reached the national championship game.

For a Huskies victory, Malloy is betting a basket of Connecticut Grown products from farms around the state. Pence wagers agricultural products from Indiana that the Fighting Irish will take the title.

"The undefeated UConn women's basketball team has gained national attention and inspired thousands of young basketball players in our state," Malloy said. "They've taken eight national championship titles in the past, and I am confident that a ninth trophy will be brought home to Storrs tonight. With a victory by the men last night, we are just one step away from winning titles in both tournaments for the second time – something no other school has accomplished."

The Fighting Irish are the fifth team in NCAA tournament history to advance to the national title game three times in a four years—and the first since the Huskies who were national champs 2002, 2003 and 2004.

"With their undefeated record and three appearances in the championship game in the last four years, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have the skills and experience to secure a win tonight," said Pence. "While the UConn Huskies are a tough opponent, the Irish have the full support of Hoosiers across the state of Indiana, and we're confident they'll come out ahead."

Tonight's game tips off at 8:30 p.m. EST, and broadcasts live on ESPN.
