Daughter of Late Sandy Hook Principal Takes Stand Against Gun Violence at the DNC

"She [Hillary Clinton] reminds me of my mother. She isn't scared of anything. That's why I believe in her. There is finally someone who can change things," Erica Smegielski said in a short video clip that was played prior to Smegielski taking the stage at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday evening.

A resident of Prospect, Connecticut, Smegielski's mom Dawn, the former principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School, was killed on December 14, 2012 at the age of 47 when a gunman opened fire in the school, killing 20 children and 6 adult school staff members.

Upon taking the DNC stage Smegielski said, "I should not be here tonight...my mom was murdered, so I'm here."

DNC attendees stood and clapped when Smegielski remarked, "Too many politicians cower behind the gun lobby instead of standing with American families."

The 2016 Democratic National Convention (DNC), which was held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, concluded last night, July 28.
