Firewood 101 at Green Chimneys on October 4

Editor's Note:  With the start of fall, we have received several inquiries about firewood. Because this program in Brewster, NY is one of the few in the area that assists in wood-cutting safety and other firewood tips, HamletHub thought we would share with our readers.

Green Chimneys in Brewster, NY* is offering a Firewood 101: Chainsaw Safety, Firewood Regulations, and Tree Selection program on Saturday, October 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 Noon to help you get ready for the wood-cutting season by sharpening your safety skills.

Chainsaw safety is critical yet many users don’t know the basics of chains and sharpness that can make your cutting and felling a safer and more efficient experience. If you are new to using a chainsaw, or even if you’ve been using a chainsaw for years, this program will help get you started safely.

Program also includes advice from a forester on how to assess your woodlot and choose a firewood tree, and a discussion of state firewood regulations and invasive insects. Come and learn, and leave a safer, better-educated chainsaw user and forest steward.

Program:

Chainsaw Safety - 90 minutes
Jonathan “Hans” Hanbicki of the Committee for the Advancement of Arboriculture will employ his 30+ years of tree care to instruct chainsaw users on personal protective equipment and chain sharpness; demonstrate safety of on-the-ground cuts; and discuss felling: what, why, and when to walk away. Program does not include hands-on chainsaw use.

Firewood Regulations and Invasive Insects - 15 minutes
Jen Stengle of Cornell Cooperative Extension will discuss current firewood regulations and why they are in place. Discussion will include examples of invasive insects and how they hitchhike on firewood.

Choosing Firewood Trees - 45 minutes
Forester Brendan Murphy of the Watershed Agricultural Council will walk attendees through the process of determining how and why to choose a tree for firewood.
