Nutmeg Chapter of National Charity League Learns Basics of Self-Defense

Ridgefield's Nutmeg Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL) welcomed Gus Bottazzi and Dannie Phillips from KravMaga Self-Defense Studio to their February meeting. The dynamic duo educated and empowered attendees with the basics of self-defense.

Gus explained, "Crime happens everywhere...and you need options to protect yourself." He went on to say that our society teaches us to not make eye contact, to be polite, and to avoid confrontation. Predators are looking for someone who is vulnerable, such as not paying attention, looking down at their electronics, or walking in a secluded area.

Both Gus and Dannie introduced and demonstrated various real-world scenarios and principles of KravMaga, which is an Isreali-based method of self-defense. As a first line of defense, they showed non-violent tactics to identify threats, such as making eye contact, keeping a safe distance, and using your voice and hand gestures, to neutralize a potential attacker. Then, they escalated their strategies to include practical applications of more complex defense and offensive maneuvers and techniques to deal with physical threats and actual harm.

Patronesses (mothers) and Ticktockers (daughters) attended the training as part of the Chapter's educational component and for them to gain life skills and confidence. Thank you to Gus and Dannie for empowering our Chapter with self-defense tools!
