Family in Ridgefield begging for money is from Poughkeepsie

There has been quite a bit of buzz on social media about the family begging for money outside of the Copps Hill Shopping Plaza (125 Danbury Road).

It appears the family is gone - at least for now.

"They said they didn't need help, and they contacted a relative to pick them up," explains Ridgefield Police Captain, Jeff Kreitz. According to Police, who made contact with the family on Sunday, August 13, the family is from Poughkeepsie, NY. "They know how kind and generous Ridgefield residents are," said Kreitz.

When Ridgefield Police spoke to the family, they were eating pizza and did have money. "Officers asked them if they needed help and they said no," explains Kreitz.

Ridgefield Police do not have any reports that the family has returned to Ridgefield since they were approached by officers on Sunday.

What should residents do if a person begging for money approaches their car or if they see a beggar in town?

"If they tap on your window, don't open it," advises Kreitz. "It's up to the individual if they want to give them money," he adds.

Ridgefield Police encourage residents to call them at 203-438-6531 if they have any concerns or see anything suspicous.
