I love when new businesses come to town! I popped into SARZA, a new shop at 83 Purchase Street in Rye, the other day and had a chance to speak with owner, Sarah Briginshaw:
"When my husband and I first arrived in Rye to see if it was a fit for our family, we were instantly taken with Purchase Street. It exuded charm with its small independent style shops, and we loved how pedestrian friendly it was.
It wasn’t until after we moved our family here and had started to settle into our new home that the idea of having my own retail space was born. I spotted a vacant storefront and immediately contacted our realtor to investigate. From there it was an organic process, and SARZA has now been open since April.
I have a passion for interiors. In South Africa, I was surrounded by friends who were architects and interior designers—we all shared that love. I first began dealing with product while living in Antibes, in the south of France. I worked supplying high end ‘arts de la table’ or homeware for dressing your table to the booming yacht industry in the Mediterranean. This eventually led to me joining a friend back in South Africa and buying product for the shops at a series of high end lodges.
South Africa has an unbelievable creative spirit. With limited employment opportunities, people are looking to carve out a new way to support themselves and their families. This has bolstered entrepreneurship in the country—especially in the design world.
I love that I can support small business and advance the opportunities of these companies who mainly make the product by hand. It is slow process manufacturing—goods are made by craftsmen and women, with love, care and meaning. Every product has its own beautiful story that I am always happy to share with customers who step into SARZA."
Whether you’re looking to add a pop of color to your space or searching for the perfect combination of cozy and chic, SARZA features exclusive, handcrafted items from upcoming designers. Artisan jewelry from Kirsten Goss and Pichulik, scandi style furniture from Vogel and LIM, and botanical print fabrics and wallpapers from Clinton Friedman are among the vibrant mix of treasures you will find.
Come and see for yourself!
