Solar Eclipse Lecture this Friday at the Southbury Public Library

The Great American Solar Eclipse on Friday, August 11 at 2pm in Kingsley

Want to know more about the Great American Solar Eclipse- how it works, how to view it safely, and more?

This presentation will cover basic celestial mechanics of a solar eclipse, the track of Totality for the August 21st eclipse, and what you can expect to see from Connecticut. Recommendations on where to travel to see Totality, the long-range weather prospects for the 21st, and safe viewing of the eclipsed sun will also be discussed.

On Monday, August 21st, the moon will eclipse the sun as its shadow races across North America at more than 1,000 miles an hour. With the darkest part of the moon's shadow crossing the continent in approximately 90 minutes, spectators within a narrow track in 14 states from Oregon to South Carolina will experience a Total Solar Eclipse, with the entire sun briefly covered by the moon. Outside the 70-mile wide track, only a portion of the sun will be obscured.

To register to attend, please call us at 203-262-0626 ext. 130. As with all our programming, this presentation is free and open to anyone interested, regardless of their town of residency.

Bill Cloutier, an engineer by day and a life-long amateur astronomer by night, will be giving this presentation. He was involved in the planning and construction of the world-class McCarthy Observatory in New Milford, which opened in 2000, and is one of many volunteers that currently operate and maintain the public facility. His interests include lunar photography, solar system exploration and the history of spaceflight.
