Planes, Trains, and Automobiles at the Edmond Town Hall

In honor of the 30th anniversary of its release, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (R) will be shown at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 12 at the Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street, Newtown. Tickets are $3, and for those with hearing impairment, the matinee will be captioned.

Director John Hughes takes holiday travel to nightmare level in this film, starring Steve Martin and John Candy. Neal Page (Martin) is the Everyman character who’s just trying to get home to his family on time for Thanksgiving. “If something can go wrong, it will,” states Murphy’s Law, and Neal is a living example. Del Griffith (Candy) doesn’t have it so easy either, in fact he’s in the same situation, but where Neal is a curmudgeon about it, Del tries to make the best of it. Their trip from New York City to Chicago takes them via Wichita and St. Louis, utilizing not only the title vehicles but also, a bus and a semi. The situations these two characters find themselves in are more and more preposterous, yet painful as well, because they are opposites.

Neal is a guarded, well-off businessman with high expectations, which when not met causes extreme irritability. Dell is an affable traveling salesman selling shower curtain rings, who makes the best of things, no matter what life throws him. How can these two get along? They don’t really, but Del is determined to make it work, giving Neal another chance, again and again. For Neal, Del is just a means to an end, and he looks forward to parting ways forever once they reach Chicago. While Del is almost friendly to a fault, though, his jovial personality is a mask.

Don’t miss the remaining film this year, presented by the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission, It’s A Wonderful Life, on December 17.
