On the Children's Shelf: Girl Scout Books

Growing up, I was a Girl Scout. I loved being a scout. I loved working on badges and doing things with my troop. Now, as an adult, I love seeing my children enjoy Girl Scouts as much as I did.

When we were decorating our playroom, I wanted a way to combine parts of my childhood and my husband's with current things from my children's childhood. My mom saved my Girl Scout books, and we included them in our playroom along with some older Girl Scout books we've collected over the years and my daughters' Girl Scout books.

My children and I love looking through my old Girl Scout books. Inside one, we found a sticker with my name on it (I remember when my mom got me those stickers). I love seeing which badges I earned with my and my leader's signatures underneath all the steps as confirmation of my completion of those requirements.

We love looking through the old Girl Scout books we found at flea markets and tag sales. It is amazing to see how much things have changed in the past 100 years, while at the same time, seeing the many similarities. I love that my children can pick up these books and flip through them. They can see that once I was their age going through the same things as they are, and it hopefully helps them realize that I too was once a child. I too was once just like them. They are reminded of the rich history of being a scout, and that is so much larger than simply a group of children gathering together after school.

One of our older scout books was filled out by the scout who owned it. She included her troop number, information about her troop, and like mine, her book is signed by her leader. I treasure this book as much as I treasure my own scout books, and hopefully as much as my girls will someday treasure theirs.
