Yale University Properties and the Shops at Yale will be displaying summer-themed art work created by Long Meadow Elementary School students during July and August in the Broadway Shopping District in New Haven. The art work can be found in restaurant and store windows throughout the Broadway Shopping District, which is located in the heart of the Yale Campus.
In November, 2014, Yale University's Office of New Haven and State Affairs and University Properties started the Elementary Art Program in an effort to connect the Yale community and vibrant downtown businesses to communities within and outside of New Haven. The program was a great success and brought such joy to the community that they expanded it to include additional schools throughout the year.
Pieces can be found in merchant windows on the following streets:
- Broadway Avenue - beginning at the Yale Bookstore and ending at Emporium DNA (on the corner of York and Broadway, at #1 Broadway)
- York Avenue - extending from York Pizza to Gant (on the corner of York and Elm Streets)
- Elm Street - from Gant to Maison Mathis (304 Elm Street)
- Park Street at the Tarry Lodge (278 Park Street)
"Back in March, Yale University invited my LMES students to participate in this initiative from Yale University Properties," said Mrs. Porter-Hahn. "Our 'charge' was to create artwork around the theme of Summer. My students worked enthusiastically and diligently to communicate their unique ideas for this very authentic audience. I have been so proud of their amazing efforts, both creatively and technically. We were able to choose 51 glorious pieces to exhibit. I hope you will be able to see the work in person sometime during the summer."
