Town of Soutbury announces detours around Routes 6 and 188 Sunday night into Monday morning

On Sunday, March 12th, members of the Southbury Police Department and the Connecticut State Police will assist in escorting a "Super Load" through Southbury. It will take place between the hours 9pm and 5am.

The load consists of a turbine for the Towantic Power Plant being built in Oxford. This is the first of 6 loads, each one weighing between 1 Million and 1.5 Million pounds. The load is so heavy that it is being transported on a special self-propelled trailer that moves at 3-5 mph. Therefore, it will take a total of five nights to move it from Hartford to Oxford.

Through Southbury, the load will be traveling down RT 6 from Woodbury and then left onto RT 188. There are two sections on RT6 where "bridge jumpers" need to be laid down to carry the weight. One will be on RT 6 just south of the Woodbury line and the other is on RT 6 in between the I-84 overpass and Main Street South. In order to put the "bridge jumpers" down, the roadway will need to be completely closed for an hour or more. There will be detours set up.

Please exercise patience and follow the signs if traveling through the area at this time.
