Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Rebuilding Their Herd, Seeking Horses Ready for a Career Change

Our therapeutic horses are the true heart of our mission. Saying goodbye to a herd member is never easy, even when it is the best decision for our equine friend. Pegasus Farm lost our beloved pony Walter in June after years of partnership at our Kelsey Farm and Pegasus Farm chapters. Though he liked to pretend he was a grumpy old man, he actually was a lovable softy and a very bright boy. Walter, thank you for all you gave to us, and we know Jingles, Packer and friends were there to welcome you over the rainbow bridge. You will be missed, dear friend!

Now that the Michele Arnhold Education Center is open and more stalls are available, Pegasus Farm is rebuilding our herd. Lorado Z, a 16.1-hand Zangersheide Warmblood, has "graduated" from his trial period and will be joining us in summer program. We also have a new pony on trial at Pegasus Farm -- the adorable black beauty, KoKo. If you know anyone whose horse is ready for a new career, click here for information on what we look for in a therapeutic horse and how to get the process started.

Do you have a horse who is ready for a career change and might be a good candidate for Pegasus?

Pegasus Therapeutic Riding is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides equine-assisted activities and therapies to people with special needs, veterans and at-risk individuals. Our $1.4 million annual operating budget is almost entirely funded by donations. Herd management comprises a significant portion of the budget.

As an equine-based organization, the success of our programs is directly tied to our careful selection of horses and ponies. For our participants, working with horses is a liberating, life-changing experience. In order to best serve them, our equines must be fit and possess a suitable temperament for the therapeutic work they will be trained to do.

Here is what we look for in an ideal therapeutic horse:
• Mare or gelding between 13-16.1 hands*
• 9-15 years old preferred*
• Sound at the walk, trot and canter
• Tolerant and calm temperament
• Safe to ride in the ring and on trails

*Size and age exceptions are made if the right horse comes along, so please talk to us if you are not sure.
