Local Historian Uncovers Litchfield County's Scandalous Past

If you want to know about the seedy side Northwestern Connecticut go to the Hunt Library in Falls Village. On Saturday April 29, local historian Peter Vermilyea will discuss his new book, Wicked Litchfield County, a compendium of true stories involving thieves, rum runners and knaves.

In Wicked Litchfield County, local historian Peter C. Vermilyea explores the underbelly of Northwest Connecticut history including women being accused of witchcraft for not bearing enough children, counterfeiting empires, the nation’s first mass murderer, and the crime-ridden prohibition era. Peter C. Vermilyea teaches history at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, Connecticut, and at Western Connecticut State University. A graduate of Gettysburg College, he is the director of the student scholarship program at his alma mater’s Civil War Institute. He is the author of Hidden History of Litchfield County (The History Press, 2014), recipient of the 2015 CultureMax Award and he maintains the Hidden in Plain Sight blog at www.hiddeninplainsightblog.com.
