Pomperaug Woods Announces Connecticut Senior Juried Art Show Award Recipients

Pomperaug Woods senior living community announces the recipients of the 10th Annual Connecticut Senior Juried Art Show awards. First, second, third and honorable mention awards are presented in four categories: Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, and Photography. Additionally, a “Best in Show” award is given to the artist who best demonstrates “the feeling of beauty and life in his/her artwork.”

Mary Jane Ives, from Oxford, is this year’s winner of the Tommie Davis Award, or “Best in Show,” for “Nature’s Nectar.”

Kevin Moshier, executive director at Pomperaug Woods, said the community is proud of the art show’s continued growth. He notated that they received 225 entries from 123 seniors from 45 Connecticut towns this year.

The art show, where the winning pieces will be on display, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 23 and Sept 24 at Pomperaug Woods, located at 80 Heritage Road in Southbury. The event is free and open to the public.

Best in Show: Winner of the Tommie Davis Award

First Place – Ralph Schwartz, Monroe – “Budapest Opera Haz”

Second Place – Lorraine Ryan, New Milford – “Chinoiserie”

Third Place – Jeffrey Sells, Stratford – “School Bus, North Haven”

Honorable Mention – Patricia Ann Trapp, Glastonbury – “Shining Thru”

Winners in the Drawing Category

First Place – Bette Donahoe, Cheshire – “Basket of Meyer Lemons”

Second Place – William Rorick, Southbury – “Star”

Third Place – P.R. Bailey, Unionville – “The Majestic Ram”

Honorable Mention – Inga-Britta Mills, Roxbury – “Minute Poses”

Winners in the Sculpture Category

First Place – Joe Sam, Harford – “Middle Passage Slave Ship”

Second Place – Deborah Cornwell, Southbury – “Reversible – White On White”

Third Place – Lon Pelton, Windsor – “Invasion of Privacy”

Honorable Mention – Harry Kamel, Southbury – “Woven Clay”

Winners in the Photography Category

First Place – Charles Fleishman, Oxford – “Village Elder”

Second Place – Peter Coffeen, Norfolk – “Still Life – Pear”

Third Place – Charlotte Dzujna, Southbury – “Shadow Play”

Honorable Mention – Pat Broman, Southbury – “Corner Shop, Rockport Maine”

Winners were selected by a panel of four local judges Zufar Bibkov, an Oakville, Connecticut-based professional painter Michelle Murelli, an art therapist at the Wellspring Foundation in Bethlehem, Connecticut. David Merrill, a Southbury, Connecticut, painter and Medal of Merit recipient and John Rohlfing, a professor of art at Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The award winning pieces will also be displayed at Mattatuck Museum, 144 West Main St. in Waterbury, from October 8 to November 19.
