Speak out today about budget cuts to the LIbrary System

A Letter from the Woodbury Publc Library Director Patricia Lunn on proposed cuts to the State Budget that directly affect the Woodbury Library and the Southbury Library!

April 2015 is an important time for all Connecticut libraries. The proposed state budget not only eliminates funding but repeals the enabling statutes that allow needed library programs and services to exist. The legislature should restore funding to Connecticard, to Cooperating Library Service Units, and Grants to Public Libraries.

Cutting Connecticard means...

CT residents will no longer be able to borrow from any public library across the state.

Local libraries will be forced to shut their doors to their neighbors.

The savings that CT residents realized through Connecticard ($68M in 2014 by borrowing 4.5 million items from libraries across the state) will vanish.

Slashing Cooperating Library Service Units (CLC) means...

Without state funding, CLC will be severely hampered in its mission of saving public libraries and taxpayers over $7.1M annually by coordinating the purchase of books and other products.

In just six months in a past fiscal year, our membership in CLC let us save $11,420.04 on products and services purchased through CLC. Our library staff also took advantage of attending many roundtables and workshops.

Eliminating Grants to Public Libraries means ...

Eliminating the law that guarantees adequate funding to your local library. This could severely restrict access to books, electronic media, and information along with service hours.

What can you do to help?

Attend the “Rally to Save CT Libraries” on April 15 from 12-2 pm at the State Capitol. Or write a letter, make a phone call, or email our state and local officials.
