Detectives Investigate I-84 Shooting Incident in Hartford

I-84 eastbound in Hartford re-opens after Detectives spent the afternoon processing the scene of a shooting incident that started with reports of a car fire.

On August 12, 2016 at approximately 10:39 a.m., Troop H – Hartford was notified of a car fire on I-84 eastbound near the Exit 46/Sisson Avenue on-ramp with a male walking away from the vehicle. Two members of the Hartford Fire Department as well as three Connecticut State Troopers arrived on scene and observed a male walking east, away from the vehicle, with a firearm. Troopers were attempting to speak to the male at which time he shot himself. Troopers and fire personnel provided first aid and the male was transported via ambulance to St. Francis hospital. The male remains alive and is being treated for the self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At the time of the initial incident there were also reports of suspected gunfire in the area at the time. It is currently unknown if those reports were in fact gunfire, ammunition in the vehicle exploding or the sound of vehicle components exploding due to the fire. Due to the nature of this incident and out of an abundance of caution, an explosives ordinance robot was used to clear the vehicle before firefighters approached to extinguish the fire. The Central District Major Crime Squad responded to the scene and will be conducting a thorough investigation. We want to stress that there is no threat to the community.

We ask that anyone who witnessed the incident or believes they may know something about it to call Troop H at 860-534-1000 or text “TIP711 w/ info” to 274637. All calls and texts will remain confidential.
