Person-to-Person Awards Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships to Jennell Barrett and Jamal Barrett

Stamford residents and siblings Jennell Barrett and Jamal Barrett have been awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship by Person-to-Person.

As part of the P2P Scholarship Program – established in 1968 to provide financial assistance to college students from low-income households, many of whom are the first in their family to pursue higher education – the award bearing the name of Dr. King has significant meaning given King’s own academic achievements and his belief that education allowed people to break free from the “…miserable culture of poverty.”

With the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship, each year P2P recognizes the considerable achievements of two college seniors who demonstrate a high degree of integrity and responsibility as well as a commitment to community service. In recognition of these accomplishments, each student is awarded $1,000 for their use.

The Barretts were honored at the Stamford MLK ceremonies attended by Congressman Jim Himes, P2P Scholarship Committee Member Josephine Fulcher Anderson and P2P Executive Director Ceci Maher on the January 15th holiday commemorating the birth of Dr. King.
