Norwalk Redevelopment Agency and Historical Commission to advance latest section of the Norwalk River Valley Trail
Under the leadership of the Norwalk Redevelopment Agency and the Historical Commission, the Norwalk River Valley Trail (NRVT) will soon have an important addition to the Trail in Norwalk. The additional trail will run from Crescent Street, through the historic Pine Island Cemetery, to the Lockwood Mathews property.
Currently, the NRVT in this area runs through Devon’s Playground and presents the risk of a bike – child incident. Susan Sweitzer of the Norwalk Redevelopment Agency said, “The proposed alternative route through the cemetery makes much more sense from a safety standpoint and is a more a desirable, interesting environment in its own right”.
The Historical Society will create a tour of Pine Island including three interpretive signs, a walking tour brochure and markers for the tombstones that are included on the tour. David Westmoreland of the Historical Commission said, “The addition of the NRVT to the Pine Island Cemetery is an important part of our ongoing efforts to make this important historic site more accessible and interesting”. Westmoreland also pointed out, "The new trail section will follow the existing carriage road path through the cemetery, so as not to disturb any burials and will be an oil and stone topcoat, instead of asphalt, to maintain the historic character of the cemetery."
Resources Services of Bridgeport was awarded the trail construction project. It’s expected that this new section of the NRVT will be completed by November 1.
