Member Exhibition at Stamford Loft Artists Gallery is Inspired by Stamford Museum & Nature Center

“Landscape Paintings and Forgery” Member Exhibition at Stamford Loft Artists Gallery in collaboration with the Stamford Museum & Nature Center ~ January 5 to February 5, 2017

Opening Reception Thursday, January 5, 6 to 8 pm

Inspired by a landscape painting from the Stamford Museum & Nature Center’s permanent collection, Loft Artists Association members will showcase an exhibition of landscape work on view in the East Gallery at 575 Pacific Street from January 5 to February 5.  “As curator of the Stamford Museum, I look forward to the openings at the Loft Artists’ studios. They are collaborative, fun evenings where people interested in fine art gather to share, learn and converse about the outcomes of the creative process.” Kirsten Brophy SM&NC.

Midsummer, Montclaire, NJ” c.1873 is a large oil on canvas landscape that was gifted to the Stamford Museum in 1971 by Harvey L. Rohde of New Canaan, CT. Originally attributed to George Inness (1825 –1894), a prominent American landscape painter, art historian and Innes expert Michael Quick has verified that the actual artist was Alexander Wust, (1837-1876) a Dutch-born landscape painter who painted in a style quite similar to Innes.  Forged signatures and dates create faked paintings.  Who benefits and who loses in the shady, even criminal world of art forgery? The painting will be on view and Curator Kirsten Brophy will tell the full story at the opening reception January 5at 7 PM.

This show marks the third collaborative event between LAA and SM&NC, free to the public. “Landscape Paintings and Forgery” is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4:30 pm. Admission and parking are free. Handicapped access is available by appointment. For directions and more information visit loftartists.com or call 203-247-2027.
