The downtown Yonkers parking area better known as Chicken Island hosts a carnival every year. Crowds flock to the lively atmosphere replete with children's amusement rides and games.
This year, a worker displayed the confederate flag in a trailer on the grounds. The flag is often interpreted as a symbol of segregation. http://westchester.news12.com/news/yonkers-residents-upset-over-confederate-flag-found-at-carnival-on-chicken-island-1.13499550
Yonkers Parking officials demanded that the flag be taken down. In 2015, a Palestinian flag, along with several other countries, was hung to celebrate the diverse merchants in the South Broadway corridor. It too was removed by the City of Yonkers. http://news.hamlethub.com/swyonkers/politics/1652-palestinian-flag-flies-in-yonkers
