Virginia Woolf is Having a Birthday Party

Wednesday marked the 130th anniversary of Virginia Woolf's birth, and to honor the occasion, 30 participants will be reading from Woolf's iconic “A Room of One's Own” at the Unitarian Church in Westport this Saturday. Of the event, Barbara Fast said by email, “My hope is that this is just the first and that we can grow it into a movement that inspires, challenges and enlivens our creative lives!”

Gabi Coatsworth, one of Saturday's readers, shares the details below:

By Gabi Coatsworth

I was born on January 25th 1882 in Kensington, London. It's the spot where I used to hang out as a teenager, full of arty cafe's, galleries, and famous museums. As part of the Bloomsbury group, she lived in Bloomsbury (of course) which is where my University was situated, so I trod in her footsteps daily in my early twenties. When I moved to Richmond as a young mother, I suddenly realized that I lived just down the road from the Hogarth Press, the publishing company she started with her husband Leonard Woolf.

And now, even in this unlikely part of the world, Virginia and I are crossing paths again.

This Saturday, Jan. 28, over 30 actors (and I) will be doing a reading of Woolf's famous book on women and writing: “A Room of One's Own.”

Location: The Unitarian Church, 10 Lyons Plain Road, Westport

Birthday Cake will be served at 12.30 p.m. and during the intermission.

The Reading begins at 1 p.m.

Cost: Free, but a free-will offering would be much appreciated to benefit the Beardsley School in Bridgeport and the Morriss Street School in Danbury.

"A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction."
