Help Bring a New Police K-9 to Westport

Police K-9s are essential members of law enforcement and perform vital tasks that humans cannot, including pursuing and apprehending fugitives, detecting illegal substances and explosives, and searching for missing people.

Unfortunately, many police department K-9 units are suffering budget cuts due to the poor economy, and they are unable to solicit money due to town and municipality codes. As a result, some K-9 handlers forgo training or personally fund their dogs’ needs, and in some communities K-9s may not be replaced upon retirement due to budgetary restrictions. Costs are high, with dogs averaging $10,000.

For these reasons, many police K-9 units rely on donations to continue their mission.

How You Can Help

Trap Falls Kennel Club (TFKC) is raising $10,500.00 to support the Westport (CT) Police Department’s purchase of a police K-9.

Labrador Retriever "Chase" is currently in training to become a patrol K-9. The $10,500.00 procured by TFKC through this GoFundMe page will be donated directly to the Westport Police Department so they are able to bring Chase to Westport.

AKC Reunite will also provide matching funds of up to $5,000 to help the department purchase their new police K-9.

We encourage dog lovers in Connecticut to pitch in and keep the K-9 units healthy and strong in our state. Please donate what you can to ensure our community has this vital resource that helps our police officers and citizens stay safe.

How Trap Falls Kennel Club Has Helped

In 2013, Trap Falls Kennel Club spearheaded the effort to bring a new police K-9 to Newtown, Connecticut

After the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, which stretched Newtown’s resources, and the unexpected early retirement and passing of K-9 Baro that June, Newtown was faced with not having a working police dog among its ranks. Baro, who directly responded to Sandy Hook, was missed greatly by law enforcement and the community.

TKFC coordinated the efforts to raise funds to purchase German Shepherd Dog “Saint Michael” as the town’s newest K-9 officer (see the photo of Saint Michael on this page).

TFKC also helped raise funds for the Orange Police Department in Orange, CT and their newest dog and handler are presently undergoing training and certification at the Connecticut State Police Academy.

Funds raised also helped to bring K-9 Murphy to the Monroe Police Department earlier this year.
