Paranormal Investigators Tap Into Bradley-Wheeler’s Past

A bright, unexplainable “ball of light” captured on video? A close encounter with the “spirit” of a former housemaid at Westport’s Bradley-Wheeler House who was also the mistress of a local minister?

If unusual doings like these pique your interest, come out to the Westport Historical Society on Sunday, Sept. 28, for “When Ghosts Appear, History Speaks.” The 1 ½-hour presentation will be given by members of the Connecticut-based Northeast Paranormal Investigations Society.

Since its founding some five years ago, the NPIS has done research at historic sites throughout the Northeast. On July 19, team members visited WHS Bradley-Wheeler House headquarters with audio-video equipment in tow to look for evidence of paranormal activity involving the home’s former residents.

On Sept. 28 and you can try your hand at paranormal investigation yourself; NPIS reps say they plan to invite audience members to identify sounds and “speech” captured on tape. “Some of it is crystal clear, some isn’t,” said Adam Shefts, NPIS founder and lead investigator. In addition, the program will offer up these intriguing pieces of “evidence”.

■ The spirit of “a Confederate soldier” who was recorded at a home in Gettysburg speaking “a full sentence.” Shefts said it was from this house that the bullet that killed the battle’s only civilian was purportedly fired.

■ Images of a keeper peering out the window of Sheffield Island Lighthouse and his daughter’s statement telling why she was afraid of him in life as well as the afterlife. How spooky is that?

Before investigating an historic property, NPIS researches the lives of the people who lived there, Shefts said. They do not look for just any paranormal activity, but for data that can be linked to people identified during their research.

Shefts and his team are all hobbyists with day jobs who do their paranormal work on weekends only. He said the team member who encountered the spirit of the housemaid is what’s called a “sensitive.” She “has this gift and gets something in her mind’s eye,” he added. Many are skeptical of such a “gift,” but you’ll have to hear what she has to say yourself. We think you’ll find it surprising!

“When Ghosts Appear, History Speaks” Sunday, Sept. 28 from 2- :15 p.m. There is a $10 donation, and reservations are suggested: (203) 222-1424. Westport Historical Society, 25 Avery Place, across from Town Hall. For more information about the WHS, westporthistory.org.
