Winnie the Pooh Comes to the Westport Library

One of the most iconic settings in children’s literature, the Hundred Acre Wood where Winnie-the-Pooh and friends lived and played, was inspired by Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, England. Kathryn Aalto, author of The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh: A Walk Through the Forest That Inspired the Hundred Acre Wood, will talk about her book on Monday, October 19, at 1 pm in the Westport Library’s McManus Room. She will discuss how A.A. Milne’s childhood connection with nature and his role as a father influenced his famous book, The Complete Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh, and how his close collaboration with illustrator E. H. Shepard brought those stories to life. The program, free and open to the public, is offered in partnership with the Westport Garden Club.

Aalto is an American landscape designer, historian, writer, and speaker living in Exeter, England. She has graduate degrees in garden history and creative nonfiction. For many years, she taught American Literature of Nature and Place in the Pacific Northwest. Passionate about walking and natural history, she recently walked the Coast-to-Coast Path across England with her family. She is a member of the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment, the Garden Writers Association, the Garden History Society and a pre-registered member of the Society of Garden Designers.
